Wood is the most forgiving fence material to build with and the least forgiving to neglect. Every decision on a wood fence is a trade between cost now and maintenance later.
Set posts in concrete below the frost line, use rails sized to the span, and fasten with hardware rated for treated timber. Species — pressure-treated pine, cedar or composite — sets both the price and the maintenance cycle.

Pressure-treated southern yellow pine, western red cedar and composite are the three common choices. Fasteners must be hot-dip galvanised or stainless; standard electroplated screws corrode quickly against modern treatment chemistry.
Height and setback are local. Some jurisdictions also restrict what may be built within a drainage or utility easement, which frequently runs along exactly the line a fence wants to follow.
Post concrete cure is the schedule driver. Boards and rails go on quickly once the posts are solid.
Stain or seal on a cycle of a few years slows greying and moisture cycling. Keep soil and mulch off the boards; ground contact is where untreated timber fails first.
Hot-dip galvanised or stainless. Modern copper-based treatments corrode standard electroplated fasteners from the inside, and the failure is invisible until a board comes loose.
Freshly treated timber usually needs to dry before it will take a finish. The common guidance is to wait until water soaks in rather than beads, which can be weeks or months depending on weather.
A wide board fixed at ground level below the pickets. It takes the wear from string trimmers, soil and pets, and is far cheaper to replace than the bottom of every picket.
